Custom Beams

A lot has changed since Allpine Lumber cut its first beam in 1887, but our passion for quality has remained steadfast. At Allpine Lumber, we take great care to ensure our customers get the best products available.

Truly Custom: Whether it's a rustic mountain cabin, your modern dining room, or your industrial office, custom beams will transform any space into an elegant showpiece. Let us know the size, spices, and finish, and we will help you explore the options.

Your Custom Options:

Custom Sizes: Your project engineer often determines beam sizes, although if they're non-structural, it comes down to how you want them to look. Give us a call or visit our showroom; we can assist you in choosing the right size beam(s) for your project.

Custom Spices: Spruce, Douglas Fir, and White Fir are the most popular in our region, simply because that's what grows locally. Each species features different characteristics:

  • Dead-standing Spruce is our "go-to" for building timber-framed structures and log homes. Materials from dead-standing logs are dry and will shrink less over time. The Spruce looks very similar to pine in color and woodgrain.
  • Douglas Fir offers superior strength and a beautiful red-waving pigmented woodgrain. Of course, all that strength and beauty comes with a price, $$.
  • The White Fir is a popular source for studs and wood sidings due to its straight grain and reputation of not twisting like its peers. White fir works best as one-inch or two-inch material - kiln-dried things. White fir often has an undesirable odor, while green. Once dry, the scent dissipates. However, White Fir beams work great for exterior projects such as porch roofs or pavilions.
  • We also deal in Pine, Lodgepole and Pandarosa, as well as Aspen. However, these woods typically not used for beams.

Custom Saw Texture/Finish: Bandsaw versus Circular Saw is a matter of personal preference. Some like the clean, elegant look of the straight striations the bandsaw leaves behind. Others prefer the rough circular swirl left by the circular saw's speedy blade. Yet others want their beams smooth, with no saw marks. They like the S4S, Smooth on 4 Sides, look or even a combination of the three.

Saw markings, Bandsaw vs. Circle saw vs. S4S

Some restrictions apply. Please note that we can not circle saw beams over 24 feet long; beams over 24 feet long will be cut with a bandsaw with the option to S4S.

Custom Beam Price Estimator (limited sizes)

Many factors influence beam prices, but the two most influential are the beam size and the availability of the correct-size log needed to harvest said beam. This beam price estimator is limited to standard sizes. If you need a size not listed, please complete the "Contact Us" form at the bottom of each page or call for pricing, availability, and lead time.
